How to Get Rid of Blackheads

Blackheads can be a big nuisance, distracting from your natural beauty with blemishes that you can’t seem to solve. However, with the right support and some helpful treatments, you can begin your journey to clearer skin and get rid of blackheads for good.

Here at Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa in Gilbert, AZ, we strive to support you in maintaining your healthiest skin however we can. Whether it’s providing you with the proper education or offering you a rejuvenating skin treatment, we are here to help you manage blackheads and be confident in your appearance.

What are Blackheads?

Blackheads are open bumps on the skin caused by a mix of oxidized dead skin cells, dirt, and oils, called sebum, clogging pores. These pores then turn black when they are exposed to air. Blackheads are a type of acne, but they are not the same as pimples or whiteheads.

Though there’s a lot you can do to stay on top of them, there’s a significant genetic disposition to blackheads/pore size. People with oily skin are more likely to develop blackheads, but anyone can get them.

How to Remove Blackheads

Though it might be tempting to pick at those stubborn blackheads, you’ll want to resort to better treatment methods if you really want to eliminate them. In fact, picking can make blackheads worse, leaving you with an infection and then possibly scarring. Fortunately, you can tackle blackheads with a few tactics.

1. Try Salicylic Acid

One of the best tools in your arsenal against blackheads is salicylic acid. It’s a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) that works to remove excess oils and dead skin cells from the surface of your face.

You can find salicylic acid in daily cleansers and make it a part of your skin care routine. It’s best to start by using a cleanser with this ingredient once a day to see how your skin reacts. Some people are sensitive to salicylic acid, so stop using it if you notice any adverse reaction.

Colair not only sells products from SkinMedica and other high quality professional skin care lines that include salicylic acid, but we incorporate them into a few of our facials as well, allowing you to enjoy all the benefits of this helpful ingredient.

2. Exfoliate

Exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin cells from your skin’s surface. You can exfoliate using a chemical treatment or an exfoliation tool, like a brush. Although there are doubts about the effectiveness of exfoliating for acne, it is a helpful practice for blackheads.

Be sure to choose a gentle cleanser over a harsh scrub that can irritate the skin. As a BHA, salicylic acid is a great option for exfoliating, but you can also use an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) or other BHAs.

Exfoliating also offers a range of additional benefits past improving blackheads. By removing dead skin cells and cleansing your pores, exfoliating can also help soften your skin and make it appear more vibrant.

3. Try Retinoids

Retinoids are an ingredient that can open up your pores to more easily remove dirt and oil, acting as an exfoliant for your skin. By opening up the pores, retinoids may even help make other skin care products more effective, allowing them to penetrate deeper into the skin.

Keep in mind, however, that strong retinoids are not the best choice for those with dry or sensitive skin, as they can irritate your skin even further. You will want to speak with your skin care professional before you start any retinoid product.

4. Use a Face Mask

Face masks are another great option for drawing out oil and dirt from your skin. They are both excellent as a skin care practice and a self-care routine.

The two most popular face mask options are:

  • Clay masks – Clay masks help remove oils and toxins from the skin and unclog pores, and they are great for those with oily skin. Some clay masks also have sulfur, which breaks down dead skin cells that can cause blackheads.
  • Charcoal masks – Charcoal masks work similarly to clay masks but are thought to be more efficient at purifying the skin.

Face masks can be a great addition to a consistent skincare routine. Try using them about once a week to maintain clear pores.

5. Perform a Chemical Peel

A chemical peel is the practice of applying a chemical solution to your skin to exfoliate it, make it smoother, and provide a more youthful appearance. On top of helping you enjoy more vibrant skin, a chemical peel is also a great way to target blackheads and prevent the clogging of your pores.

At Colair, we offer a chemical peel as one of many options to support your journey to clear skin. We have options for chemical peels with multiple levels of intensity, so we can help you find the right treatment for you and your skin type. Our skilled aestheticians will also ensure you have a full understanding of what to expect during the process so you are comfortable throughout.

6. Receive a Facial at Colair

Instead of picking at blackheads, control them with the help of professionals. A facial treatment from our skilled providers at Colair can make all the difference. We start off by steaming your pores to open them up—then, after some magical topical solutions, we can manually clean up all of those pores.

We offer a variety of facial treatments that allow you to find the best option for your needs, including:

  • Classic Facial
  • Luxe Facial
  • Fire & Ice “Red Carpet” Facial
  • Diamond Glow Facial

After completing your facial, one of our highly trained aestheticians can point you in the right direction for choosing the appropriate skin care products. After your treatment, you’re going to want to keep your skin moisturized—this helps keep the skin balanced so you don’t overproduce oil.

Ways To Prevent Blackheads from Forming

Of course, the best way to get rid of blackheads is to prevent them entirely. With a solid skincare routine, you can minimize the risk of blackheads forming before you have to worry about getting rid of them.

Some ways you can prevent blackheads include:

  • Washing your face morning and night with warm water and a mild cleanser
  • Moisturizing your skin daily and after washing
  • Choosing non-comedogenic skin care products and makeup
  • Using topical or oral retinoids, after consulting with a skin care professional

What To Avoid

As you work to manage blackheads, it’s important that you are careful not to make them worse with the wrong techniques. Be sure to avoid the following things in your skincare routine:

  • Harsh scrubs – Harsh scrubs can irritate your skin and make you more prone to blackheads and other types of acne. Stick to gentle cleansers and avoid over-exfoliating.
  • Picking/squeezing – Touching or picking at blackheads can irritate your pores, causing redness, damaged pores, and potentially more blackheads.
  • Sleeping in makeup – Wearing makeup overnight can clog your pores and make blackheads more likely.
  • Oily products Excess oil can clog your pores and cause blackheads. Try thinner products or oil-free products instead.

It can be hard to determine the right routines and strategies for managing blackheads. Fortunately, our experienced team here at Colair is ready to provide you with guidance and support. Let us be your skincare partner by helping you find the right strategies, products, and routines to keep blackheads under control.

What is Preventative Botox?

The fountain of youth may not exist, but science has gotten pretty darn close. There are plenty of products and treatments available that can help reverse or even stop the signs of aging. One of the most popular treatments is Botox.

Botox uses botulinum toxin injected into the skin to help reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. The toxin—that’s not toxic or harmful to the body—paralyzes the muscles, so they are more relaxed, creating less wrinkling and creasing in the skin.

There are two main types of Botox that we can help you with at Colair Beauty Lounge and Med Spa in Gilbert, AZ: preventative Botox and corrective Botox. Both do well in an effort to increase anti-aging and both contain their own properties depending on the solution you want.

What Is Preventative Botox?

One of the major preventative Botox benefits is that it prevents wrinkles before they set deep into the skin. The key is to get the treatment early before the face has many visible wrinkles or fine lines.

Preventative Botox uses the botulinum toxin to relax the muscles in the face. These paralyzed muscles prevent the skin from creasing and forming fine lines or wrinkles.

Before having the procedure, you’ll have a consultation with one of our registered nurses at Colair, where you’ll discuss possible side effects and aftercare instructions. During the Botox process, the specialist will identify the facial muscles to apply the Botox. The preventative Botox process takes only ten to thirty minutes.

How often do you need to do it? Preventative Botox isn’t something you do only once. It often takes a few sessions to yield initial results, and you’ll need to maintain the effects after the first visit.

When can you see results? It can take up to two weeks to see any initial changes. On average, it takes ten to twelve weeks for patients to see their desired results. And to maintain the results, you should get treatments about three to four times a year.

How much does it cost? On average, preventative Botox costs between $250 and $500 per session. The price depends on how many areas need to be treated as well as the dose required per injection.

Who Is a Good Candidate for This?

Firstly, the FDA has approved Botox for patients older than eighteen. For those looking to use Botox to prevent aging, many people get their first treatment in their mid-twenties.

Technically, you can receive Botox treatments in your early twenties, but at that time, it’s unlikely that wrinkles have formed or set into the skin. Preventative Botox decreases the chance of having wrinkles in the future.

Who should get preventative botox? Anyone who wants who’s looking to maintain their youth and fight wrinkles before they start.

Why You Should Consider Preventative Botox

Taking the preventative approach is easy the solution to stop early lines from becoming wrinkles. Starting Botox early, before wrinkles have the chance to set in, reduces the chance of having wrinkles in the future. You’re also less likely to have deep-set wrinkles.

You should consider getting preventative Botox fillers in your twenties because not only can it prevent the development of deep static facial lines, but it may also prevent wrinkles altogether. You also may save on high Botox costs down the line because there won’t be as many wrinkles to fight.

What Is Corrective Botox?

Corrective Botox has a similar goal as preventative Botox: to fight against the signs of aging, wrinkles, and deep lines. But corrective Botox is used when those signs have aging have already set into the skin.

The main goal of corrective Botox is to soften or make the lines disappear. The procedure makes the skin taut, which helps smooth it out. This is especially helpful when those deeper creases begin to set in.

Botox and fillers can also help with volume loss and thin skin as you age. The older we get, the thinner our skin becomes, not only making wrinkles more prominent but also causing us to lose the youthful plumpness our skin once had. Sagging skin may also become a concern.

Botox and fillers can combat these issues. Botox fights the fine lines and wrinkles, while corrective fillers can help add plumpness back to areas like our cheeks, marionette lines or lips.

The process between both versions of Botox is similar, where you’ll be in a professional medical room while one of our registered nurses injects the treatment. The whole process only takes ten to thirty minutes.

As for maintenance, you should receive a series of treatments about every twelve to sixteen weeks to maintain your results. The cost typically ranges between $250 and $600 at Colair depending on the location you need and the amount of Botox needed to correct the wrinkles.

Who Is a Good Candidate for This?

Those looking for corrective Botox treatments are better for people who already have deep-set wrinkles or fine lines on their skin. Most people begin seeking corrective Botox treatments in their mid to late thirties and is an increasingly popular treatment for those in their forties, fifties, and sixties. While there isn’t an upper age limit, health risks associated with advanced ages may make Botox not the best option.

When Corrective Is a More Appropriate Option

Corrective Botox is the more appropriate option if your skin is already showing signs of aging. Consider this if you have:

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Sagging skin
  • Loss of volume on your face and neck

This version can also be more appropriate if you’ve had unhealthy habits surrounding your skin, such as smoking, frequent use of tanning beds, and overexposure to the sun without using protective measures. All of these can lead to the formation of wrinkles and fine lines that Botox can then treat.

Reverse the Signs of Aging With Botox

Who says growing old gracefully can’t come with a little Botox? If you’re looking to reverse or prevent the signs of aging, you can do that with Botox. Both corrective and preventative Botox are great ways to help your skin look younger.

Pamper yourself and allow your inner beauty to shine through. At Colair Beauty Lounge and Med Spa, you can reverse and prevent signs of aging through Botox injections customized to your needs. Contact us to schedule a free consultation at our med spa in Gilbert to start your beauty journey.

So if you’re a 20-something and thinking that Botox isn’t something you need to consider for decades, think again. It’s basic beauty-instincts to follow certain anti-aging and preventive measures like wearing sunscreen, applying night cream and drinking water, but imagine altogether halting the development of wrinkles before they even start?

So, what is Botox? Contrary to what many believe—Botox isn’t shipped from heaven— rather, it is Botulinum toxin type A, a wonder drug made to smooth out lines by preventing muscles from contracting. Believe it or not Botox has been around for 100 years. Initially approved for treating eyelid spasms, Botox then went on to be used for bladder spasms and excessive sweating, then in 2002, it was approved by the FDA for treatment of wrinkles on the upper face. Located in Agritopia, Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa is your one-stop skincare destination and our experts are ready to answer your questions about Botox and other med spa services.  If you’re interested in learning more about the benefits of Botox or have questions, please do not hesitate to visit or call us at (480) 923-6138.

Solve Skin Imperfections With Plasma Pen Treatments

Who says you need to get under the knife to achieve better, brighter, more youthful-looking skin? Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa knows the importance of looking and feeling your best. This fuels our pursuits in bringing you the very best resources to achieve your skincare goals.

Plasma Pen Treatment, also known as Plasma Fibroblast Therapy, is a non-invasive skin tightening procedure used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, diminish acne scars, fade sun spots, and tighten and smooth the skin without the cost and prolonged recovery time of invasive plastic surgery.

Not sure if the Plasma Pen is right for you or your skin? Here’s what you should know about Fibroblast Treatments and what to expect.

How Plasma Pen Works

Women eyelid lifting, fibroblast procedure.

The Plasma Pen stimulates fibroblast cellular activity. Fibroblast cells are responsible for producing collagen in the skin and healing wounds. This FDA-approved device essentially causes micro-injuries to the skin to promote the growth of new skin.

The pen delivers a controlled electric charge to the skin tissue, and the low-voltage current energizes the thin layer of plasma on the skin. The tiny electrical shock to the skin tissue encourages new fibroblast activity leading to more collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production.

What Can Fibroblast Therapy Treat?

Most patients opt for Fibroblast therapy to solve skin imperfections around the eyes, mouth, forehead, jaw, neck, and decolletage. However, you can safely use the device on your arms, forearms, hands, knees, lower legs, inner and outer thighs, tummy, breast, and bottom.

Plasma Pen works its magic in a non-surgical environment to help with the following:

  • Forehead lines and creases
  • Droopy or heavy eyelids
  • Excess skin in the under-eye area
  • Removing sun spots, moles, blemishes, and other skin tags
  • Reshaping drooping or misshapen eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet near the eyes
  • Smile or smoker’s lines around the mouth and nasolabial folds
  • Loose skin around the jawline
  • Loose skin in the neck area
  • Stretch marks
  • Acne and acne scars

The Plasma Pen is quickly becoming a go-to alternative to painful cosmetic surgery. The fast results, diversity, minimal side effects, guaranteed effectiveness, and pain-free application allow patients to see the same results without needles, cuts, stitches, and downtime that often accompanies cosmetic surgery.

Are You A Good Candidate?

After treatment, you will see a noticeable difference in your skin. The treatment is effective for all skin types; however, some people may be at greater risk of pigmentation problems. As a general rule of thumb, people with a lighter skin tone tend to have better results.

Your results will also depend on which problem areas you want to target and how severe the skin imperfections are. The best thing you can do is visit your local Med Spa to have your skin examined.

Where To Get Plasma Pen Treatments

Plasma Fibroblast Therapy should always be performed by a professional. The safest place to get treatment is at an accredited Med Spa.

When it comes to taking care of your skin, you deserve the best. At Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa, our trained RNs work with you to help solve pesky skin issues. To learn more about Fibroblasting your problem areas, get in touch with us today by calling (480) 923-6138.

Dermal Filler Myths

If you’re not familiar with the magic of dermal fillers, hear our praises for this incredible treatment to handle loss of volume in the cheeks, lips and nose folds. Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa in Gilbert, Arizona uses dermal fillers on all types of patients with a variety of skin concerns. Today, we’re going to address a few myths we’ve heard about dermal fillers.

They Hurt

Like anything to do with a needle, there’s a bit of a pinch involved. BUT, our staff (which includes a registered nurse) will apply topical ointments to numb the area, making it as comfortable as possible.

They’re Made of Silicon

That’s a terrifying thought. Dermal fillers are usually made of hyaluronic acid, which is the farthest thing from silicon. It’s actually a substance that is naturally produced in your body. With time, they naturally dissolve into your system with zero side effects. Dermal fillers are FDA-approved.

It’ll Give Me Duck Lips

So you want dermal fillers, but you’re terrified of coming out with permeant “duck lips”? This is something we hear ALL THE TIME. The difference with working with a well-trained professional, like the ones at Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa is that we’re able to navigate a more natural look. Our staff is constantly receiving training and further education to assist you.

Dermal Fillers are Permanent

The beauty of dermal fillers is that they’re not forever, but they last longer than most injectable treatments. Fillers usually maintain the results you’re after for several months. The biggest appeal to them, is you’re not going under the knife for amazing results.

Are you ready for dermal fillers in Gilbert? Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa would love to meet you and answer all of your questions and concerns. Please visit or call us at (480) 923-6138.

Gastric Sleeve and IV Nutrient Therapy

If you’re thinking about getting weight-loss surgery, you’ve probably researched every possible side-effect, tip and how-to. As I prepare for my own journey with the gastric sleeve procedure, I looked toward Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa for a vital helping hand.

During gastric sleeve surgery, they remove up to 80% of the stomach. This is what helps most patients lose 60% of their extra weight over the first 12 to 18 months. Your new and improved sized stomach means you’re going to be taking in a whole lot less food, and less nutrients.

Vitamin and mineral deficiencies post-opp are one of the biggest hurtles following this life-changing procedure. The side-effects of having these deficiencies can include fatigue, anemia, muscle loss and even hair loss. Adding to this struggle, your new stomach size doesn’t permit you swallowing a bunch of vitamins. Alas, this is where Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa come in to help.

With the assistance of my family doctor, I’m planning on getting bi-weekly IV Nutrient Therapy to help combat the loss of nutrients. Especially in the first few weeks post-opp, where I’ll be subjected to liquids only. Moving forward, there’s a peace of mind knowing that Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa has a registered nurse (and Doctor supervision) performing IV Nutrient Therapy.

I.V Nutrient Therapy is such an ideal treatment because the good stuff is directly put into your bloodstream, you don’t have to worry about skipping a meal to make room for your vitamins. By bypassing the digestive process, the vitamins + minerals are more fully absorbed. Terrence M. Fullum MD, MBA, told Bariatric Times Intravenous (IV) micronutrient therapy is safe, feasible, reliable, and relatively inexpensive. But is being considered more and more as a prophylactic and therapeutic option for bariatric patients.”

For more information about IV Nutrient Therapy or any med spa services, please visit or call Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa (480) 923-6138.

“First of all, my job exposes me to a lot of skincare products. I get to test the best of the best. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say my favorite was iS Clinical. If you’re looking for a line of products that actually works, this is it. It’s amazing for all ages, genders and for all types of skin concerns. It’s a better product because of the research and ingredients that go into it.”

Cleanser: “I’m absolutely crazy about the Warming Honey Cleanser. I find most {cleansers} strip my skin, but this luxurious gel not only smells incredible but cleanses deeply, and leaves your skin moisturized.”

Serum: “After I’ve washed my skin, it’s time to slather on a serum. It’s a vital step in my regimen, because it helps seal the moisture in the skin before you apply any kind of cream/ moisturizer. I reach for the Youth Serum, a potion that helps with the signs of aging. My skin suddenly has more bounce and smooths out my skin before makeup.”

Moisturizer: “Right, so living in Arizona it’s vital we load up on hydration for our skin. It doesn’t matter how much Botox we get, if your skin is dry, it’s going to age you terribly. I really enjoy the Reparative Moisture Emulsion for an all-over moisturizer; it’s gonna help protect your skin from environmental aggressors and really work on fine line and wrinkles.”

SPF: “Between your serum and moisturizer, you should wait a minute or so. Brush your teeth, etc and let that good stuff soak in. After I’ve applied my moisturizer in and waited a min, I move onto the most vital part of my routine. SPF isn’t an option. Mom, Dad, Kids, and dog (joking) should wearing SPF Daily. And at least a SPF 30. I opt for the iS Clinical Eclipse SPF 50+ because it goes on sheer, light and doesn’t mess with my makeup.”

Skin’s Summer Survival Guide

There’s just something about summer that makes even the most prude skin-fanatics lose all their inhibitions and regular skincare routines. Maybe it’s the ocean air, kid’s out of school or perhaps just the bottle of Rosè. But, it’s vital that you keep your cool and remain sunscreed-ed and more during summer break. Below are few tips to fighting the sun this season from your friends at Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa.

Sunscreen: Yes, we’re gonna state the obvious. But sunscreen is the best, and possibly the simplest way to prevent sun damage (I.e sunspots, wrinkles, cancer, etc). Mix it with your favorite cream and reapply every few hours.

Don’t Just Spray It: Yes, those spray sunscreens work, but according to dermatologist, folks aren’t rubbing it in properly. Leaving you with streaky protection. Spray the section of your body until it glistens, and then give it a proper rub-in.

Get Shady: Sure, sunscreen is gonna do it’s thing, but why stop there? Get glamorous with a giant hat, long sleeve shirt and oversized shades to protect the skin around your eyes. Think vampire in the Hamptons, people.

Burned: So you’ve disregarded all of this and you’re looking like a lobster? The first thing you want to do is stay hydrated. UV light causes inflammation, and staying hydrated helps repair the skin barrier more quickly. Also, don’t pick any blisters and pile on the aloe.

Too Little, Too Late: Maybe you’re reading this article a few years too late and you’re seeing some spots, lines and wrinkles. We’ve got the magic for that. The sun is our skin’s biggest enemy, and through treatments like PRP Facials, Botox and some of our amazing skincare products, we can help reverse the damage that’s already done.

If you’d like to learn more about how to keep your skin safe this summer, or what we can do for preexisting sun damage, allow our registered nurse at Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa take a look at you and answer any of your questions. Please visit or call us at (480) 923-6138.

Smoking and Straws: Lips Biggest Enemies

Few aesthetic aging signs are as damning as line around the lips or smoker’s lines. But the worst part is, you can develop them even if you’ve never picked up a cig. Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa knows bad lines and wrinkles happen to good people, and we can help.

Not unlike lines around the eyes or forehead, lip lines care caused by muscle movement. Repetitive moment often results in permanent lines, that become deeper with time. Smoker’s lines are caused by puckering of the lips. Though far less worse than smoking, using a straw creates the same muscle movement that causes said lines.

If you’ve managed to avoid smoker’s lines around the mouth, prevention is everything. Make sure to ditch the cigarettes, straws and wear plenty of SPF. Sun exposure is going to expose the skin cells to damage and effect the appearance of fine lines. Keep the skin around the lips well hydrated.

Perhaps you haven’t been able to dodge these pesky lines, but fear not! Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa is here to help at whatever stage your fine lines may be at. We’ve got two very success options to treat lip lines. One being Restylane Silk, a injectable that smooths out the lines around your lips. It’s FDA-approved and made of hyaluronic acid, a substance that your body produces naturally.

Another option is our PRP Treatment. PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma and it’s an incredible treatment for all types of skin concerns, especially lip lines. How does it work? Our registered nurse draws your blood, separates the blood and then performs microneedling on the targeted areas. The PRP is applied to the face and absorbs into the face, increasing collagen production.

So if you’re suffering from smoker’s lines, or maybe just straw lines, Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa in Gilbert, Arizona can help. Come by for a free consultation with our RN, or give us a call at (480) 923-6138.
