Botox can help keep excessive pesky underarm sweat at bay all year long. For some people, it can drastically improve their quality of life. Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa has a solution.
Hyperhidrosis is a common condition where someone sweats excessively, not necessarily related to heat or exercise. The most commonly affected sites are the underarms, hands, and feet. Studies have found that regular Botox injections can result in an 82-87% decrease in sweating if you have hyperhidrosis.
Botox is a standard, effective treatment for excessive sweating. If you don’t respond well to other sweat-blocking products or treatments like prescription antiperspirants, Botox injections may help keep you dry all day long. Here’s everything you need to know about Botox injections to treat sweating.
Botox for Underarm Sweat – How Does it Work?
Botox injections to treat excessive underarm sweat are FDA-approved. People with hyperhidrosis have overactive sweat glands. The injections prevent perspiring by blocking the nerves in your body that trigger sweat. For example, if you get Botox in your underarms, the overactive nerves in your armpits are essentially paralyzed and can’t signal your sweat glands, so you don’t sweat. According to the International Hyperhidrosis Society, the effects of Botox on the underarms can last around 4 to 12 months. After that, booster injections are generally recommended every 7 to 14 months to keep you as dry as possible.
What’s Hyperhidrosis Treatment Like?
Getting Botox for excessive sweating is like getting it anywhere else on your body. Small amounts of Botox will be injected under your skin, usually in a grid pattern. The injection sites are around 1–2 centimeters apart, and most people require anywhere from 15 to 20 injections just below the surface of the skin.
Botox for underarm sweat takes 10 to 30 minutes, and you can go home immediately after. However, we recommend waiting around 24 hours to resume regular exercise.
Tip: If you’re getting Botox injections in your armpits, please don’t shave for 3 to 4 days before your appointment. We suggest skipping perfume and deodorant for around 12 to 24 hours after underarm Botox injections.
If you’re concerned about pain, ask us about numbing the area before the injections. Some people prefer a local anesthetic to ease any pain or discomfort. Most people tolerate Botox injections well with little to no issues.
When Will You See Results?
You should notice less sweating in the areas you received the injections in around 2 to 4 days after treatment. However, the full effects of Botox are usually apparent within 2 weeks. Keep in mind that people with hyperhidrosis will require ongoing treatment to prevent the body from perspiring. Some people only need the injections yearly to avoid sweating.
